How to choose a Hypnotherapist

It is perfectly right to question anything you are unsure about, I would be the same. Hypnotherapists are not medically trained to the level of a doctor, but to be a member of a registered body of hypnotherapists like APHP you must have undergone a comprehensive training programme covering theoretical and practical hypnosis, over the course of a year and then passing a final exam. Some therapists only have to complete a one day course or even a correspondence course.

A fully trained therapist should be able to explain to you how the process works and they cannot make you do anything you would not wish to do. This should all be part of a free initial consultation, (One off programmes like quit smoking do not require this).

Some therapists work from home and others from offices, this does not affect the therapy, as long as you are comfortable with the environment. However it should be a place where you can relax and therapy should not be carried out in there living room. A good therapist will have a designated space that is conducive to the work to be carried out.

If you have mobility issues do they either have the facilities at their rooms or do they offer a mobile service? If a therapist does not advertise this they may still offer the service.

Be clear about what you wish to see the therapist about, it maybe that this is not in their area of expertise, if not they should be able to refer you confidentially, to someone who can. If you are unsure you can check if they are able to refer you to other therapists if required.

All therapists should be insured and be able to show that they are committed to continuous improvement in the profession. They should all have access to a supervisor; no therapist should practice without one. It is to ensure the quality of the work is maintained.
